With the Crunchyroll Fall 2024 anime season in full swing, fans are tuning in to indulge in highly anticipated new seasons from series like Natsume's Book of Friends, Blue Lock, and Re:Zero. Crunchyroll is also bringing plenty of exciting new anime into the mix, with the latest Dragon Ball series, DAIMA, Demon Lord 2099, and the found family, slice-of-life comedy anime You Are Ms. Servant launching throughout October 2024.
After a stellar Summer 2024 anime lineup, fans are looking forward to everything on offer, and given the first episode of You Are Ms. Servant, Crunchyroll is off to a great start. The best slice-of-life anime tend to be some of the most comforting, as they occur in familiar everyday world-settings that nearly everyone can relate to. They deal very heavily in the realm of emotion, which makes them perfect for cozy autumn nights and weekends. While not always romantic in nature, romance is often a factor, though how that particular emotion comes into play as the story progresses has yet to be determined from an anime-only perspective.
What's the Story With You Are Ms. Servant?
Former Assassin Meets Lonely (Messy) Teenage Boy & the Rest Is History

Following the story of a teenage boy named Hitoyoshi Yoyoka who seems to be living on his own, You Are Ms. Servant is a 2024 anime based on the manga of the same name (Kimi wa Meido-sama) by Shotan. Given the state of disarray the house seems to be in, Hitoyoshi's either not very good at taking care of himself, or he's a bit depressed about being alone and lacking the motivation to clean up. When a mysterious young woman knocks on the door looking for a job, she explains that she was sent by her master to work for his family.
As Hitoyoshi invites her inside, she begins to describe her skill-set as an assassin, completely throwing him for a loop. He not only has no idea who would have recommended her to him, no need to hire her. With no need for an assassin in his life, he sends her on her way, but then chases after her when she accidentally leaves behind one of the tasseled bells she wears in her hair. While walking toward her, he steps in front of an oncoming truck, prompting her to put her sharp reflexes to use as she darts forward and saves his life.
Japanese Voice Cast for You Are Ms. Servant

- Reina Ueda as Yuki / Xue
- Eriko Matsui as Agemochitaro

Recognizing that she's never saved a life before is a jarring realization for the young assassin. As they begin parting ways again, Hitoyoshi asks if she'd like to come work for him as a maid. She perks up and agrees, but when they arrive back at the house it quickly becomes clear that, despite her honed skills as an assassin, she's actually pretty clumsy when it comes to housework. Working together, the pair get a room of the house tidied, and then have a meal together.
As usual, I can't distinguish whether it tastes good or bad. However... I feel warmth.
- Ms. Servant
It's during this meal that it becomes obvious just how desensitized Ms. Servant is. She doesn't understand the concept of eating for enjoyment because it's always been a means to an end. She eats to refuel her body, and nothing more, but the first time she tastes tonkatsu sauce it's an explosion of flavor that immediately changes her perspective. It warms her in ways that she becomes obsessed to the point that even as she sleeps that night, she dreams of a giant bottle of tonkatsu sauce she can keep licking and tasting because it will never be empty.

You Are Ms. Servant's Art Style Is Absolutely Adorable
The Moe Anime Art Style Draws Attention to How Sweet These Characters Are
Even after just one episode, it's clear that the moe anime art style is one of You Are Ms. Servant's most charming qualities. Moe tends to be associated with affectionate feelings, and the emotional nature of this type of story lends well to the adorable. Even though it promises at times to touch on the darkness of Ms. Servant's past, which led her to this new point in her life, viewers will feel an instant sense of fondness and warmth towards her.
With only two characters introduced in this first episode, a preview of supporting characters introduced in the trailer reaffirms this style. From the adorably chonky dog Agemochitarō to Riko Yoyoka, there is definitely something endearing about the visuals that's sure to satisfy shojo fans looking for a warm, fuzzy feeling.

You Are Ms. Servant's Premise Is Perfect for Cozy Afternoon Anime Binges
Everyone Knows Fall is the Best Season for Binging Anime

It's impossible not to find Ms. Servant, who has yet to be given an actual name of her own in the series, endearing. Not only is she completely adorable and naive, despite her brutal nature, but it's obvious from the moment she arrives that she is disconnected from the world and humanity in the saddest way. Trained assassins, by nature, tend to be cold individuals. Discouraged from emotion or connection in order to carry out their delicate work without attachment, someone trained as a child to work as an assassin would be lacking in basic human emotions. But Ms. Servant wants to feel, and unlocking the emotions she has never been allowed or able to feel promises to pluck at heartstrings in the best way.

25 Best New Romance Anime, Ranked
With shojo series like Skip And Loafer and Raven Of The Inner Palace, recent anime seasons have delivered some truly amazing romance titles.
So far, the romance has been on the light side, but promises to unfold at a good pace. The comedy aspect of the anime had some high points. There's something hilarious about a clumsy assassin who can't handle a mop and bucket but can toss a head of cabbage into the air and cut it into ribbons in the blink of an eye. Watching Ms. Servant come into her own and figure out who she wants to be within the structure of a normal life promises to be as hilarious as it will be heartwarming.
From a single episode, however, it's impossible to pinpoint any distinct flaws, but there are definitely a few things this anime will need to achieve in order to prove itself strong enough to stand among the ever-growing pool of slice-of-life romantic comedy anime. The overall story isn't entirely unique, so it will take a few more episodes to learn how the story progresses. One can only hope it doesn't get lost in the shuffle of all the new anime debuting and returning to the service. For now, however, it's worth keeping an eye on, especially for fans of anime like Violet Evergarden and A Silent Voice.
The first episode of You Are Ms. Servant premieres on Crunchyroll October 5, 2024.
