The Grand Rapids Press from Grand Rapids, Michigan (2025)

THE GRAND PRESS MONDAY, AUGUST 13, 1923. LITTLE REFINERS SEE SURE RUIN IN GAS PRICE FIGHT Rates Continue to Drop as More States Follow Dakotas' Lead. TEXAS BUYS AT 11 CENTS Upkeep of Service Stations Is Blamed for High Retail Costs. 3 1-y LANDIS BITTER IN VIEWS ON GASOLINE PROFITS Chicago, Aug. Associated Press)-Many of the small refineries are threatened with failure unless they are protected and obtain a.

price that will equal the cost of production. according to statements out by the gasoline price war started by South Dakota, and which has spread to several other states of the middle with reductions which caused Isoline to sell from 11 cents to 2.3 cents a gallon. In South Dakota. where Gov. W.

H. McCaster declared the former price 26.6• cents a gallon was "no less than highway and obtained a large quantity of gasoline to be sold by the state at 13 cents a gallon, gasoline sold Nesterday for 10.5 cents a gallonhe lowest paid in 10 years. Drivers adopted the slogan, "fill her up" and sales were reported trebled. See Bankruptcy Ahcad. Independent dealers in South Dakota said they saw only bankruptcy ahead, and at Milwaukee, where a 3-cent reduction is predicted, George F.

O'Neil, president of the O'Neil Oil Paint declared that unless the Oklahoma producers can be protected, they will be forced out of business. In Texas yesterday gasoline sold from 11 cents in Dallas to 19 cents In Houston. Nebraska got into the fight when Gov. C. W.

Bryan sent telegrams to all principal oil companies requesting a reduction in price. TAs a result of agitation in the central west, Gov. Len Small of Illinois announced he was investigating the situation with a view of taking action. Officials of the Standard Oil Co. In Kentucky intimated there soon would be 8.

reduction made in Kentucky. Gov. E. P. Morrow of that state said he had no public funds available for the purchase and sale of gasoline.

Drops at St. Reports from St. Paul, state that the two refining comparies there have announced they will sell gasoline from trucks at cents a gallon. Some Minneapolis independent all companies said last night they could obtain gasoline laid down there for 11 cents a gallon. Others, however, declared that it was an unusually low price.

According to C. Roy Hill, secretary of the Minneapolis, Automobile club, he quoted an offer of 12 cents a gallon for gasoline in carload lots. Due to the influx of coal oil and asoline in large shipments through the Panama canal to Atlantic ports the refineries east of the Rockies have been forced to sell Now cost of production and Are consequence in danger of going out of business. Aubrey G. Maguire, president of the Bartles-Maguire our declared at Milwaukee.

Many Close Down. George F. O'Neill, president of the O'Neill Oil Paint in a statement said that "at present many renneries in Oklahoma are closing down for 30 days and a large number of smaller refineries are on the verge of bankruptcy. Unless they can be protected and can secure a price that will equal the cost of producing oil an important source of 'the nation's supply will be closed. It is the elaborate equipment for serving the public that gasoline companies must' maintain in order to compete that is responsible for the apparent high cost of gasoline.

Statistics show that over the entire country service stations average 300 gallons a day the year round sales. Estimating expense of maintenance of each of these staations at $25 a day there is an expense of 8 cents a gallon which must be paid by the consumer. New Orleans, Aug. state of Louisiana will make an exhaustive probe into gasoline prices immediately, Attorney General A. V.

announced here following reports from other cities that gasoline was being sold at from 3 to 6 cents lower than the prevailing price here, cents. Minneapolis, Aug. Kenesaw Mountain Landis, national baseball commissioner, who in 1907 as federal judge, fined the Standard pil Co. $29,000,000, said in Minneapolis Sunday that "it is absolutely unconscionable," it true, that gasoline worth 11 cents wholesale is being retailed in Minnesota for 23.2 cents." If the spread between the wholesale price and the retail price is 65 cents on five gallons and $1.20 on 10 gallons, then I say it is absolutely unconscionable that there is a spread of more than 100 per cent," he said.
