Doom 3 (Doomer4Life Review) (2025)

Doom 3 (Doomer4Life Review)

Some of you are probably asking yourself, "why is he writing a review for Doom 3, wouldn't that be biased?"...well I may be a Doomer through and through, but I take gaming very seriously and I can be unbiased toward Doom, but I'm here to give you probably the most accurate review of the game you'll find.

There are two major flaws to this game. The first is that while it is a Doom game, it's formula is nowhere near as fluent as the classics. The frantically paced gunplay is there, but you may face five enemies at most in an encounter, walk around in the dark for a varied amount of time and come across a single enemy. The old Dooms was very different, it wasn't quite so linear in its battles. Also, Doom 3 was quite barren in the Puzzle-solving department, another aspect that thrived with the old Dooms. The second flaw to this game is id made it look too good, which means if you want it to run decent, expect to shell out a few extra bucks to upgrade your PC.

Gameplay:

The gameplay is what makes it Doom, the strongest enemies of just about any FPS all make a grade A return. Expect fast-paced gunplay with big weapons along with Flashlight switching...You heard me, Throughout the game you have the option of running into a dark room with your gun and the ability to not see anything, or seeing the room but not having theability to defend yourself. A lot of people did not like this, I'm not a fan of myself, but I see that it is very interesting and makes every step you take in the game a cerebral one, oh yeah, save often too.

Graphics:

On a high-end system, the graphics are still the best we've seen. And several other game companies want to get their hands ont he Doom 3 engine, so expect the technical advancements id has made with this installment to be the norm for the next few years to come. Shading, Textures, Movement...all run very fluidly and look good while doing it. In order to get it like that of course, you'll need a high end system.

Sound:

It's Doom, grunts, hisses, and ambience reach an all time high in this interpretation. But as with the graphics, to get the full experience, expect to shell out more money for 5.1 Stereo Surround, to enhance it all.

Controls:

I was a little disappointed with the controls, No mouse strafing made it difficult to move out of the way of explosives and fireballs. Though being able to change weapons with the mouse-wheel was a nice feature. The sprint feature was almost never used by me, basically because I had to map strafing to keys, there was no room for Sprinting, Jumping, Reloading, and Flashlight Switching in the same vicinity.

Overall:

It's as simple is this, if you're playing the game with the bare minimum System Requirements during the day, you'd be playing a completelydifferent game from at night on high-end system. For that I can't just give a number review like so many people do. If you have a real good PC or enough money to make it into one, by all means this a must-have for your collection. But if you have neither of those, it will still be well worth the wait for the X-Box version, if you're an FPS fan, you can't simply pass it up even with the its flaws.

Final Thoughts:

Does it live up to its Doom name, of course it does, but just as easily as it does that, it is nowhere near as good as any of the classics, and just barely edges out Doom 64 from being the worst Doom. Some will say it's a disappointment, compared towhat id is capable of I'd be hard pressed to disagree, but overall I was not disappointed, it was everything id said it was and one thing id never said was that "it will be better than the old Dooms", good thing, 'cause nothing ever will be :).

Graphics, too good to pass up, 9.0/10

Sound, with 5.1 Stereo Surround with would be a 10, but it'll just have to settle with a 9.0/10

Gameplay, Fast, Furious, Scary, perhaps a bit repetitive, but other wise worthy of a 9.0/10

Control, A bit underwhelming and mapping of keys can become a crucial and tough call, 7.0/10

Overall, with all the mods out there, any flaws you feel this game has can be abolished, everything else adds up nicely. This is a solid 9.0 out of 10 experience.
